It was first mentioned in the legend of St Cuthman
who founded a church there during the late eighth or ninth century.
The 12th century Norman church of St Andrew is thought to have been
erected on the site of a previous Saxon church built of wood.
King Ethelwulf (father of King Alfred) was buried here, his remains
were later moved to Winchester. Steyning was a market town between
1272 and 1966 when the railway closed. Steyning had it's own brewery
and inns (public houses) are recorded back to 1550.
Steyning is 6 miles from the sea.
