A LITTLE MORE INFO ON STEYNING

It was first mentioned in the legend of St Cuthman who founded a church there during the late eighth or ninth century. The 12th century Norman church of St Andrew is thought to have been erected on the site of a previous Saxon church built of wood. King Ethelwulf (father of King Alfred) was buried here, his remains were later moved to Winchester. Steyning was a market town between 1272 and 1966 when the railway closed. Steyning had it's own brewery and inns (public houses) are recorded back to 1550.
